About Girls on the Run®

The Girls on the Run® mission is to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living.

Girls on the Run, founded by Molly Barker in 1996, is a life-changing, experiential learning program for girls age eight to thirteen years old. The program combines training for a 3.1 mile running event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. The goal of the program is to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, and physical development.

The Girls on the Run objective is to reduce the potential display of at-risk activities among its participants. The goal is fewer adolescent pregnancies and eating disorders, less depression and suicide attempts, as well as fewer substance/alcohol abuse problems and confrontations with the juvenile justice system.

Vision

  • To support a network of Girls on the Run councils across the country
  • To provide a life-changing experience for girls and women
  • To promote an environment that allows girls and women to reach their full potential
  • To enhance the lives of all involved in the program
  • To assist in nothing less than a complete transformation in the way girls and women perceive themselves and their opportunities in life
